The Tiwanaku culture were living close to Lake Titicaca. Tiwanaku was one of the most significant Andean civilizations. Its influence extended into present-day Peru and Chile and lasted from around 550 to 1000 AD. Its capital was the monumental city of Tiwanaku, located at the center of the state's core area in the southern Lake Titicaca Basin. This area has clear evidence for large-scale agricultural production on raised fields that probably supported the urban population of the capital. El estado de Tiwanaku (Tiahuanaco o Tiahuanacu) fue una entidad política precolombina en el oeste de Bolivia con base en la cuenca sur del lago Titicaca. Tiwanaku fue una de las civilizaciones andinas más importantes. Su influencia se extendió al actual Perú y Chile y duró desde alrededor del 550 al 1000 d.C. Su capital era la ciudad monumental de Tiwanaku, ubicada en el centro del área central del estado en la cuenca sur del lago Titicaca. Esta área tiene una clara evidencia de la producción agrícola a gran escala en campos elevados que probablemente sustentaron a la población urbana de la capital.
