Unique, Handmade Egyptian Khayamiya Appliqué Textile Art/Patchwork Quilt/Embroidery/Tapestry This is a one-of-a-kind, entirely handmade, vintage khayamiya appliqué textile from Egypt. This matchless art piece is from the 1980s, and features an Egyptian robed man with a camel going across the desert, a Pyramid in the background. Approx size 17” x 18 (thin about 1/8") ~ It’s in excellent condition. Please note there is some very minor discoloration on the hat. The image will better show. Khayamiya is an appliqué textile handiwork from Egypt, resembling embroidered patchwork quilts. The iconic Egyptian art of khayamiya was historically used as the interior fabric of tents all across the Middle East. These days, they are utilized as decorative art pieces which can be displayed as wall hangings (framed or unframed), table runners, cushion covers, etc.To create khayamiya, the skilled artisans carefully cut and hand sew different colored pieces of cotton fabric onto the sturdier base fabric, a process known as appliqué. The delicate stitch work is detailed and precise, with artisans spending their entire lives to refine their art. With the limited number of artisans producing them and because the high costs due to its laborious handmade process can’t compete with mass-produced machine-made textiles, this historical handicraft is in danger of fading out of existence.
