20th C. Indian Kanduri Ceremonial Shrine Cloth - 48" x 49" Kanduri cloth: an offering made to the shrine of Salar Masud, Uttar Pradesh, India. Provenance is available. Large vintage Indian appliqué Kanduri shrine cloth textile depicting palm trees, people, flowers, camels, elephants, a temple, birds, jaguars, donkeys and tigers on light earth tones and in multiple shades of orange, camel, tan, cream, brown, lilac, cobalt and red. Kanduri Shrine Cloth offerings are used in Salar Masud Shrine pilgrimages. The Ghazi Saiyyed Salar Masud shrine was built in the 14th century to commemorate Muslim warrior Ghazi Saiyyad Salar Masood, who was killed in battle with a Hindu kshatriya confederacy. An annual festival called Dargah Mela draws hundreds of thousands of people across faiths to the shrine in celebration. Pilgrims come to the Bahraich Dargah seeking healing and stay for days or weeks at a time. Kanduri Shrine Cloths are made to commemorate their pilgrimage, as well as an offering in the hopes of receiving healing. offerings range from small pieces of cloth to rare, detailed pieces like this.
